If you asked 10 people what it means to network, you would get 10 different answers and most of those answers would include the word “prospect”. The problem is, when we enter into a networking situation and start looking for good “prospects”, people see us coming and they run! Nobody likes to be thought of as a prospect.
How do you define networking without talking about prospects? On my personal blog, I’ve answered the big question, What Is Networking?
Your goal with networking isn’t to find someone to buy your stuff. Instead, look for the people that you have a genuine connection. Understand that there will be people that you don’t connect with and that’s okay. You’re not going to focus on those people. You’re going to spend time with the ones that you do form that authentic connection. Those are the ones who will ultimately help you prosper.
I made many mistakes with networking when I first started. I’m so glad that I got involved with wise networkers like the professionals at Network Texas because they pointed me in the right direction and helped me grow my business through education and motivation. A few of them have turned out to be my customers and friends but more importantly, they have given me countless referrals over the years.
I’ve seen it time and time again; networking works if you do it right! If you’d like to learn more, check out my book, Networking: Naked & Unafraid. You’ll learn what it really means to be “naked” with networking.
