Tips for Small Business Saturday

Tips for Small Business Saturday

Small businesses account for 99.7% of all businesses in the US. November 25 is Small Business Saturday, a national holiday celebrating America’s small businesses. Since American Express started in 2010, AE rewards shoppers who use their American Express cards that day. For example, in 2013, when someone spent $10 or more at a small business, they were rewarded $10 of credit.

Here are six tips for turning Small Business Saturday into one of your best days of the year.

  1. Start Marketing

Begin spreading the word. American Express actually has helpful tips and marketing materials for you to use. They even have easily customizable flyers for you to print out and display. Find them here.

  1. Offer Special Discounts

Discounting 5-10 percent probably won’t be enough to excite customers. Remember, they’re used to enjoying Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales around this time of year. So think bigger and get creative. Perhaps offer more substantial discounts for bundled purchases. Do you have inventory that’s been sitting too long? Offer BOGO specials on those.

  1. Make it a Celebration

Give the day a festive feel and get customers excited. Perhaps provide a selfie station, light refreshments and fun decor.

  1. Extend Your Hours

Holiday shoppers are accustomed to extended holiday shopping hours. Consider offering extra discounts during your lower traffic hours.

  1. Get Social

Make sure your social profiles are up-to-date and optimized. Pick a specific hashtag to go along with your special sale and encourage your customers to use it. Be on the lookout for customers using your hashtag and make sure you share their posts and interact with them. This is an excellent opportunity to strengthen or develop an online relationship with your customers and help improve loyalty.

  1. Freebies

Who doesn’t like free stuff? Does your customer base include children? Give away some balloons. Do you have customers of all ages? You could give away t-shirts for all ages, or small trinkets of thanks, such as a tea light candle. You could even do a more significant giveaway in exchange for customer contact information.

Don’t miss out on your portion of the Small Business Saturday spending. Get creative and start sharing.  Here’s to a supercharged Saturday!
